Plot summary

In the early eighteenth century, the ronin Ihei Misawa and his wife Tayo Misawa take shelter at a humble country inn when heavy rain makes the river impossible to cross. The guests, poor and hungry, are stuck as the downpour goes on. Ihei, a masterless samurai and fencing expert, arranges a feast for them; with no money of his own, he visits the dojos of the district and fights their masters for prize payments, keeping his wife unaware. When the weather clears, he steps in as two of the clan's young retainers face each other in a duel, and the daimyo Shigeaki, struck by his skill and temperament, offers him a place as sword master to his warriors.
