Plot summary
Alma Imhoff is a philosophy professor at Yale who has recently returned to her post after an extended medical leave and takes medication for chronic pain. In September 2019 she and her husband, Frederik Mendelssohn, host a dinner party. The guests are Hank Gibson, her colleague and best friend, and Maggie Resnick, the doctoral student she supervises. Alma and Hank are both up for tenure. Maggie is absent from Alma's class the next day. That night she comes to Alma's house and says Hank sexually assaulted her.
