Plot summary
Franco Finali is an engineer whose wife Marta walks in on him with Gloria, who is Marta's closest friend. Marta offers to stay married on one condition: Franco must accept the same treatment from her. He agrees, though the arrangement sits badly with him, and he proves unable to leave it alone. Jealousy pushes him to run the search himself, and he recruits Roberto, a colleague and his closest friend, who has long carried feelings for Marta. Marta goes along with the plan, inventing a lover and scattering evidence around the house for him to find. Franco pieces together a picture of the man: a pipe smoker with a beret, a tennis racket and a halberd.
