Plot summary
Fresh out of college, Amy is certain she is destined to be a great poet, but her parents want her to earn a living, so she takes a job at a sex shop called Adult World, where Alex is the manager. When her car is stolen, her parents learn that she had canceled the theft insurance on it to pay submission fees for poetry journals, and they call her a child. She packs her things and leaves, staying for a time with a coworker named Rubia, and then rents an apartment of her own. She approaches Rat Billings, one of her favorite poets, and talks her way into becoming his protégée, offering to clean his house. He agrees to read her poems only after she wears him down.
