Plot summary
Every college Bartleby Gaines applies to turns him down, to the chagrin of his expectant parents. He and his friends Rory Thayer, rejected by Yale, Darryl Holloway, known as Hands, who lost his football scholarship after an injury, and Glen, who scored a zero on the SAT, invent a school that does not exist: the South Harmon Institute of Technology. Bartleby asks his best friend Sherman Schrader, a student at Harmon College, to build a website for it, and they hire Sherman's uncle Ben Lewis, a former Harmon philosophy professor, to pose as its dean. Bartleby and Sherman also lease an abandoned psychiatric hospital and give it the look of a campus. The website works too well: other rejected applicants enroll by the hundred, and Bartleby lets them believe they have been accepted.
