Plot summary
Julia Talben covers real estate, though she would rather report on crime, and she keeps close ties to her sister Amanda, her nephew Charlie, and Declan Grady, a local detective and her former partner. One morning she learns that Amanda and Charlie have been killed. Richard Renshaw, the man who did it, phones her at work to apologize. Grady takes him into custody. After the funeral, Julia and Grady visit the family's house and find it sold within days of the killings, with the bedroom where the deaths took place removed from the building. Realtor Kyle says the buyer left only a post office box, and he recalls an earlier sale in which an elderly man bought a building with a recent murder and removed that room. He gives Julia a business card for Jebediah Crone.
