Plot summary
Cornelius "Con" Melody keeps a tavern in New England. He is Irish, and he holds in reverence the life he once had, when he was a nobleman and an officer decorated for his service in the British army in the Napoleonic wars. The money is gone now, and he struts about the tavern in his uniform. His daughter loves the son of a wealthy manufacturer, and Con means to make money out of that love by manipulating it. His daughter, for her part, is not taken in by him at all, and she begins to plot on her own account.
