Plot summary
Mr. Shi is a retired widower from Beijing. His only daughter, Yilan, works as a librarian in Spokane, Washington, and when her marriage ends he decides to visit and help her heal. Yilan wants no part of it. She keeps an emotional distance from her father, and when that fails she begins avoiding him in person. Mr. Shi passes part of his days on a park bench, where he meets Madam, an elderly woman who left Iran after the revolution and now lives in the United States. They share no common language, so they gesture and talk each in their own tongue, and a friendship grows between them.

- Faye Yu, the only actor not based in the United States, first worked with Wayne Wang on The Joy Luck Club in about 1991, when she was 19 and spoke no English. Wang cast her as the lead after deciding her English was fluent, and persuaded her to postpone her own work as a director in China for a 4-week commitment.
