Plot summary
Stella Kowalski lives with her husband, Stanley, in New Orleans, where her older sister Blanche DuBois arrives one summer for a visit. Blanche says she does not want to be a burden and wants to be near Stella. She reports that the family plantation is gone and that she has left her job as a schoolteacher. Stanley learns of the lost plantation, and before his weekly poker game he goes through Blanche's belongings, pulling out her dresses and jewelry, thinking she has taken the family's money for herself. Stella tells him the tiara is set with rhinestones, not diamonds, and asks him to say nothing about the baby they are expecting. When Blanche comes out from her bath, Stanley demands to see the papers about the plantation.
