Plot summary
Martha and Grace are best friends who have lived on a farm in rural Central Oregon for years, keeping to themselves the killing that the two of them concealed thirty-five years earlier. The life they have arranged for themselves on the farm is disturbed when a stranger, Alex, arrives at the property. Alex is pregnant, and Martha seizes her and holds her, meaning to keep the baby for herself once it is born. Martha knows nothing of a murderer who is hunting Alex and intends to kill the mother-to-be before the birth. Alex comes from a different world than the two women do.
