Plot summary
London is celebrating the end of the war in Europe, and Princess Elizabeth and her younger sister Margaret are permitted one night outside Buckingham Palace, over the Queen's objection. The King, won over by Elizabeth, asks her to report back on how the public feels about him and his midnight radio speech. Each princess is given an army chaperone and an itinerary that ends at one in the morning, but the formal reception they are sent to is not what they wanted. Margaret leaves her escort first, and Elizabeth follows. On separate buses, Elizabeth takes a seat beside Jack, an airman absent without leave who pays her fare, while Margaret meets Raymond, a naval officer who takes her for an ordinary girl.

- The film's officer escorts and the airman are invented: in reality the princesses went out at 10:00 PM in an organized group of 16, mingled with revellers and returned to Buckingham Palace at 1:00 a.m. Queen Elizabeth later called the night one of the most remarkable of her life.
