Plot summary
After they fell in love, Kate gave up her career plans to move to Winterlight, Everett's small hometown, where he became a doctor. The two drifted apart over the years, each resenting the other's priorities: her environmentalism, his devotion to his job. With Sienna and Gabriel now grown, Kate and Everett decide to divorce, but they agree to spend one last Christmas together in their house. Sienna returns from college with Nigel, her boyfriend, who is obsessed with Harry Potter. At dinner Nigel lets slip in front of Kate that Everett is seeing someone, a fact the rest of the family already knew. Everett says he struggled to tell her, then brings his new girlfriend Tess to meet everyone.
