Plot summary
In 1887, a husband and wife are isolated in the unsettled wilderness of the Dakota Territory. Bitter cold presses on them, and so do disease, wild animals, and crushing loneliness. Holding the family together and keeping hope alive is the struggle the frontier sets before the two of them. They are not fighting only for themselves, because new life is on the way.
