Plot summary
In Moscow, Viktor Chagarin, a corrupt official in the Russian government, wants Yuri Komarov convicted at a trial he has rigged; Komarov, once a billionaire and a whistleblower, holds a secret file that is said to incriminate Chagarin. After an assassination attempt, Jack McClane is taken into custody, and he offers to testify against Komarov in exchange for a shorter sentence. His father, NYPD detective John McClane, has not spoken to him in years. Learning Jack is in trouble, John flies to Russia and makes his way to the trial of Komarov, where a bomb goes off.

- While shooting an aerial stunt for the film in July 2012, a fire broke out on the set. Nobody was injured, and shooting resumed after a short delay.
- Before Australian actor Jai Courtney was cast as John McClane's son Jack, the studios considered Liam Hemsworth, Aaron Paul and James Badge Dale for the part.
- Composer Marco Beltrami had only six weeks to write the score, and new scenes were still being shot while the music was recorded. He wrote around 120 minutes of music, of which 80 minutes made the final film.
- For its UK theatrical release, a specially censored version was prepared at the distributors' request, cut for language and violence so the film could be given a 12A certificate.
- Director John Moore wanted the camera work to be almost entirely handheld, using three 4-perforation 35mm Arri cameras with long lenses for tight close-ups, so the camera would mimic McClane's surprise and confusion.
- Bruce Willis had wanted to make another Die Hard, but he retired from acting in March 2022 after being diagnosed with aphasia, making this the last film in the series.
