Plot summary
Jasmine Bryant is a public defender in a small Virginia town, where she handles plea deals while her husband Jordan serves as a police officer. Her boss Rory assigns her to defend Grace Waters, who is accused of killing her husband Shannon DeLong. Grace says she is guilty and will accept a plea bargain if the prison is close to her son Malcolm, and Rory warns that his office lacks the money for a trial. Grace's friend Sarah Miller says that Grace was unhappy after her divorce and that she urged her to go out and meet someone. Grace says she met Shannon at an exhibit of his artwork and married him three months later. He then turned cruel and secretive, obtained her passwords, took money from her accounts and mortgaged her house with forged documents.
