Plot summary
Russ Durrell practices law in a small Kansas town and raises his five-year-old son Calvin alone after his wife Kate left them. His Chicago firm fired him for the time he took with Calvin, and a small Kansas firm hired him on the word of his former college roommate Bob. It assigns him its least appealing case: Joyce Ives, who crashed her husband Larry's car into a restaurant where he was with a waitress, wants to sue the place. Calvin wakes him early, soaked from playing in the rain; the sitter will not take the boy, so Russ brings him to work. Russ also coaches high school basketball and benches Noah for missing practice, so Noah's sister Beth dumps dog food on his windshield and asks him out. Kate calls, and Russ refuses to let her talk to Calvin.
