Plot summary
Ralph Parker and his wife Sandy share a home in Chicago with their children, Mark and Julie. He has been away from his job for a year to write a novel, but it is too long and publishers reject it. A call from his mother, Mrs. Parker, brings the family to Hohman, Indiana, after his father dies. She asks him to do two things: write his father's obituary and make the holiday special for the family.

- Melinda Dillon, who played Ralphie's mother in the original A Christmas Story, gave Peter Billingsley her support for the sequel but was unable to reprise the part, so Julie Hagerty took over as Mrs. Parker.
- Peter Billingsley and the crew commissioned exact replicas of the house and neighborhood from the 1983 film, built to enhance the sequel's authenticity.
