Plot summary

Jack Gramm is a forensic psychiatrist and a professor at the University of Washington in Seattle. Nine years earlier his testimony helped convict Jon Forster of the murder of Joanie Cates and the attempted killing of her twin sister Janie, and Forster now sits on death row. As Forster's execution approaches, women are tortured and killed in crimes like his. Gramm is questioned about the killings by a lawyer for the Attorney General's office and by FBI Special Agent Frank Parks. The latest victim, Dale Morris, once studied psychology under Gramm and had been at the same party as him the night before. On his way to class, a caller using a voice changer tells him he has eighty-eight minutes to live. Gramm reports the call and asks for a risk assessment profile of suspects.
