Plot summary
With the polar night about to begin, a stranger steps off an icebreaker anchored out of sight and walks into Barrow, Alaska. Satellite phones are burned, a helicopter is destroyed, and the sled dogs are killed, and Sheriff Eben Oleson and his deputy, Billy Kitka, treat the incidents as separate cases. Eben's estranged wife, Stella, is in town on fire marshal business, and she misses the last plane out when Billy takes too long to drive her. Darkness falls, the phone lines and internet go down, and the stranger is locked in a holding cell at the police station. As the last of the daylight goes, a band of vampires leaves the ship for the town.

- To keep the vampires from sounding like any recognizable human accent, director David Slade had a fictional language of click consonants built with the help of a professor of linguistics at the University of Auckland, based on simple actions such as eating and hunting.
- Josh Hartnett was announced in June 2006 as the town's sheriff, and some criticized the choice because the main character, renamed from Eben Olemaun to Oleson for the film, was originally Inuk in the comics.
- When Steve Niles and his agent Jon Levin shopped the comic, drawn by Ben Templesmith, around as a film adaptation, Sam Raimi and Senator International picked up the property rights based on the original concept and Templesmith's ideas for the vampires.
