Plot summary
Sarah has come to Los Angeles to study costume design and to live on her own. She finds a one-bedroom apartment in a complex of roughly thirty residents and quickly gets to know Jerry, who manages the building, Brian, who lives next door, and Edie, an elderly woman. The place seems welcoming, with group barbecues, and Sarah settles in. Sleep does not come: noises at night leave her drained, and she misses the deadline for her portfolio. Her cat disappears. The residents' constant offers of help begin to feel like something else, and only Lester keeps his distance. At a barbecue, Lester suggests she read a book about community by Charles D. Ellerby.
