Plot summary
In 1961 the Soviet Union is working toward the first crewed flight into space, and its space team pursues that goal without pause. The United States is racing on the same path, and the competition between the two countries reaches from missile technology to the question of who will put a man into orbit first. The cosmonaut group is drawn from more than three thousand fighter pilots across the Soviet Union, and twenty are selected from that pool. Yuri Gagarin is one of the twenty. None of the pilots knows which of them will be sent, and the space team continues work on the rocket that will carry whoever is chosen.
