Plot summary
Evan Goldman is twelve, and when his parents separate he leaves New York City with his mother, Jessica, for his grandmother Ruth's house in Walkerton, Indiana. His bar mitzvah is coming, and he has left his father, his friends and his rabbi behind. Next door he meets Patrice, and through her Archie, who uses a wheelchair. Evan also wants the approval of the school's popular students: Brett, a football player, cheerleader Kendra, and Kendra's best friend Lucy. To win them over he promises a movie outing for Brett and Kendra. Lucy, who likes Brett herself, warns that she will turn the other students against his bar mitzvah unless he keeps Brett and Kendra from kissing.
