Plot summary
Kate Stanton works in advertising and is unhappy with the direction her life has taken. Her mother has died, and her boyfriend Jack Evans broke up with her; a year on, her father Mike has married Sally. Kate intends to win Jack back on Christmas Eve, though her friend Miyoko thinks she is avoiding the truth. Sally has set her up on a blind date with Miles Dufine, an architect. At a department store, perfume sprays into Kate's face and she falls. She wakes to find the store manager and a stranger, Jim, checking on her. At Nick's Bar she meets Miles, treats him rudely, and leaves to find Jack, who has a new girlfriend, Nancy.
