Plot summary
Jake Northrop is a university professor whose research is underfunded. He is working on the world's first bio-computer, which is built from genetically engineered bacteria. Something goes wrong, and he is horrified to learn that his bacteria turn people into flesh-eating monsters. Most of the creatures he made are lumbering, but others are very different: they can outrun and out-think the people they chase, and they are hungry. Bill Santini, a homeless veteran, joins Jake and a small group of survivors on the way out of Center City, and Jake wants a cure for the zombie plague.
