Plot summary
Zaza performs at a stage under the open sky in a small town in France, and she is the favorite of the crowds that come to hear her sing. Bernard Dufresne, a diplomat, arrives in the village and keeps his distance from her, afraid that he will fall in love with her. During one performance, while Zaza sings from a swing above the stage, a rival cuts the rope and Zaza falls. The fall leaves her badly hurt, and the accident is how she becomes acquainted with Dufresne. A romance grows between the two of them, and he sets her up in a villa.
