Plot summary

In Tokyo, Taki Tachibana balances high school with a part-time job at an Italian restaurant, and he sketches buildings in hopes of becoming an architect. In the rural town of Itomori, Mitsuha Miyamizu lives with her younger sister Yotsuha and their grandmother Hitoha; her estranged father is the mayor. Mitsuha performs shrine rituals, including weaving braids and preparing kuchikamizake, and she wishes she could move to Tokyo. One day the two teenagers wake up in each other's bodies. The switches keep happening at random, so they leave notes on phones and paper to manage each other's routines. Neither knows why it is happening, and each tries to keep the other's life on track.
