Plot summary

In a rural Japanese town called Mifuse, everything changes when the steel mill blows up in January 1991. The explosion cuts Mifuse off from the rest of the world and locks it in a winter that never ends. Mamoru Sagami, a mill worker and the town's head priest, tells the residents that the disaster is divine punishment for mining a mountain they consider sacred. He asks them to keep living as the people they were before, filing ID forms at fixed intervals, and says a sacred machine binds them. Fissures open in the sky, and the mill's smoke seals them again. Masamune Kikuiri, a student, discovers a wild girl in the blast furnace. His classmate Mutsumi cares for her, and Masamune calls her Itsumi. The stories he hears about where she came from do not agree.
