Plot summary
Deep in a forest where a mountain spirit and other apparitions from Japanese folklore live, a mask-wearing, human-like figure named Gin finds a lost six-year-old girl, Hotaru Takegawa, and leads her out, warning that a human's touch would make him disappear forever. Hotaru returns over the following days, and the two grow close within that rule. At summer's end she has to go back to the city for school, but she promises to come each summer holiday. The years pass, and Gin scarcely changes while Hotaru grows toward the age he appears to be. As a teenager she struggles with her feelings for him and with a shared future she cannot picture.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Hotarubi no Mori e (2011)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Hotarubi no Mori e was first planned as an original video animation, which would not have been shown in cinemas. Producer Shuko Yokoyama said the popularity of Natsume's Book of Friends, made by the same team, let them release it in theatres instead.
- The anime film was made by a very small crew because it was short and produced only in Japan, unlike most anime, which are usually made in several different countries.
- Yuki Midorikawa said the idea for Hotarubi no Mori e came to her very easily. Afraid of losing it, she wrote the manga earlier than she expected, when she still wanted more experience to write the harder story she had in mind.
- Yuki Midorikawa wrote another part of the story in 2011, before the anime film's release. Called Hotarubi no Mori e Tokubetsuhen, it was written even though she did not want to add to her already-finished story at first.
