Plot summary
Jennifer Shaw, her boyfriend Darius Clemons, and their friends Adam Lucas, Milla D'Angelo, Gary Amaan and Luis Ortiz come to a rural town in Virginia to walk the Appalachian Trail. The locals are hostile, particularly a man named Nate. Jen also meets Edith, who travels with a mute girl, Ruthie. The group sets off, and against the warnings they have received they leave the marked path to search for an old fort. A tree trunk rolls downhill and crushes Gary. Bruised, disoriented and lost, the friends camp for the night, and the next morning Milla is gone, along with their cellphones. Searching for her, they find a plaque dated 1859 that commemorates the founding of the Foundation, settlers who believed the United States was coming to an end.
