Plot summary
Ben Singer is a failed children's folk singer who proofreads for a living and sees his child on weekends. He is negative about most things. His comforts are chess games and debates on game theory with his roommate Ibou, who is Senegalese. Ibou falls into a diabetic coma and is taken to a hospital. Ibou's sister Khadi arrives from Senegal to look after her brother.

- Four days before pre-production, half of the film's budget was cut when its Canadian investors backed out; producer Miranda Bailey then financed the whole film herself through her company Ambush Entertainment.
- Michael K. Williams at first refused to audition for the role of Ibou, thinking the messages from writer-director Joshua Goldin's representatives were "a mass call"; only after Goldin phoned him several times did Williams go in.
- Michael K. Williams worked out Ibou's Senegalese accent while in Tuscany shooting Spike Lee's Miracle at St. Anna, befriending someone there to help him portray the character and pronounce the Senegal language.
