Plot summary
August "Auggie" Pullman, ten, was born with mandibulofacial dysostosis, a rare facial difference, and has had 27 surgeries. His mother, Isabel, has taught him at home, and he wears an astronaut helmet when he goes out in public. As fifth grade approaches, Isabel and his father, Nate, enroll him at Beecher Prep, a private middle school. Before classes begin, the principal, Mr. Tushman, arranges a tour with three students, Jack Will, Julian Albans and Charlotte Cody. Once the year starts, Julian and his friends bully Auggie, while Jack becomes his closest friend. Auggie's older sister, Via, receives far less attention from their parents than he does.

- Wonder author R. J. Palacio has often credited Natalie Merchant's song "Wonder", from her 1995 album Tigerlily, as the inspiration for her best-selling book; at Merchant's invitation the song was featured on the soundtrack and is played during the film's end credits.
- Some reviewers criticized the decision to cast an actor without the same condition as Auggie; in August 2021, during the Edinburgh TV Festival's MacTaggart Lecture, co-writer Jack Thorne acknowledged, without citing Wonder specifically, that he had failed to stand up for disabled talent, and pushed for initiatives such as Underlying Health Condition, launched that December.
- Tremblay's prosthetic makeup, designed and created by Arjen Tuiten, took an hour and a half to apply, and consisted of a skull cap with prosthetic ears attached, a facial prosthetic that covered his face, and a wig to tie it all together.
