Plot summary

In 2157, Maksim Kammerer, a pilot from Earth, is knocked off course by an asteroid and comes down on Saraksh. Its military police do not believe that he came from another world and place him in a psychiatric hospital in the capital, with Corporal Guy Gaal as his escort. He has landed in a country called Fatherland, run by the Unknown Fathers and their militaristic dictatorship. Maksim meets Rada Gaal, Guy's sister, and stays with the family. Guy then persuades him to join the Guards as a candidate, and the unit takes part in raids on the people the state calls degenerates.
