Plot summary
During the Russo-Turkish War, the Russian army advances through Bulgaria against the Turks. Erast Fandorin, newly out of a Turkish prison, is making his way back to the Russian side with word of an enemy attack the army has not yet learned of. On the road he falls in with Varvara Suvorova, a young woman traveling to join her fiancé, a soldier in the Russian army. Among the Russians Fandorin finds suspicion everywhere: someone in the army is working for the Turkish side, and no one is above doubt. The agent behind it, known as Anwar Efendi, works to disrupt the Russian advance at the Siege of Plevna, and Fandorin is set on his trail.

- Didier Bienaimé died the day before he was due to arrive in Russia to voice his role, so director Janik Fayziev decided to keep the actor's speech in French in the finished film and dubbed only some of his lines himself.
- The film's song "Autumn Rain", with music by Isaac Schwartz, lyrics by Bulat Okudzhava and vocals by Olga Krasko, was not written for it: it was composed for the 1984 movie Captain Fracasse and later performed in the 1999 TV series Happy New Year!.
