Ray Dolezal is a deputy sheriff in Torrance County, New Mexico. He finds the body of Bob Spencer in the desert, with a suitcase holding $500,000 beside it. The autopsy turns up a phone number on a scrap of paper he had swallowed. Posing as Spencer, Dolezal calls it and goes to the meeting it leads to, where he is robbed and told to seek out arms dealer Gorman Lennox. Greg Meeker, an FBI agent, steps in and tells him Spencer had been working undercover. Since the cash is gone, Meeker asks Dolezal to keep up the pose.
