Plot summary
With four weeks left before the prom, Ryan Woodman and his neighbor and best friend, Maggie Carter, have agreed to go together if neither finds a real date. Ryan is smitten with Ashley Grant, the most popular girl in school, who has no interest in him. Chris Campbell, a football player and Ashley's cousin, has his sights on Maggie. Chris proposes an arrangement: he will help Ryan win Ashley over if Ryan helps him get close to Maggie. Ryan composes the e-mails Chris sends her, and Chris coaches Ryan on how to treat Ashley. Neither finds the new approach easy at first, since Chris comes on too strong for Maggie and Ryan is too nervous to be rude.
