Plot summary
Best friends Malik and Eric grow up in Chicago's Cabrini-Green Homes in 1992 and attend elementary school together. Malik is friendly and mischievous; Eric is more introverted. Malik lives with his mother Dolores, his grandmother Anita, and his younger sister Dee. Eric lives in the apartment above with his father Jason and his older sister Amber. The two boys spend their free time at the park playing a game they call jumping, leaping over a stack of mattresses. A tragedy shakes the housing complex. In response, the mayor requires residents to carry identification cards and imposes unwarranted drug searches late at night.
