Watching the Detectives (2007) on Netflix

Plot summary

Neil Lewis premieres a film noir-inspired commercial for Gumshoe Video, the independent rental store he owns. His girlfriend Denise skips the celebration, so at a restaurant the next day he has a waiter spill water on her; she tells him to get his life together and he breaks up with her. Back at the store, where his friend and employee Jonathan works, a thrill-seeking stranger named Violet walks in. She has no identification or credit card for a rental deposit and talks Neil into taking fifty dollars in cash, which he leaves in an envelope. When she returns, she takes the money back and tells him a dinner can square it.
