Plot summary
Tony Jordan sells pharmaceuticals and Elizabeth, his wife, works as a realtor. Together they own a large house and raise their daughter, Danielle, and from the outside the family looks successful. At home, Tony is cold and verbally abusive toward Elizabeth, is away on business for much of the time, and has begun thinking about another woman. He also refuses to let Elizabeth help her sister with money from their savings. Elizabeth, under strain, takes on the sale of a house belonging to Miss Clara, an older woman who senses her distress. Miss Clara urges Elizabeth to pray for her husband rather than against him, and shows her a closet she has dedicated to prayer, which she calls her war room. Elizabeth decides to try.

- The Jordans were written as a white couple. Alex Kendrick began having dreams about a mostly African-American cast, took it as a message from God and rewrote the characters, and the brothers held their ground when Sony worried about a largely black cast made by a white-led company.
- In its second weekend the prayer drama took the top spot at the North American box office with $9.5 million, the first film to reach number one on less than $10 million since The Possession managed it with $9.31 million on the same weekend of 2012.
