Plot summary
The lives of two Lakota boys on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota are intertwined. Bill is 23 and the father of two toddlers, and he wants to make something of himself. Matho is 12 and a drug dealer, and he cannot wait to become a man. The screenplay took shape over several years through writing workshops and improvisation sessions with people in the community, and the material was split between the two characters.

- War Pony grew out of a friendship Riley Keough struck in 2015 with two extras, Franklin Sioux Bob and Bill Reddy, while filming American Honey in South Dakota; she introduced them to Gina Gammell, and over years of writing workshops and improvisation sessions the project took shape.
- The screenplay for War Pony was written from Franklin Sioux Bob and Bill Reddy's own life experiences and stories they had heard; the material ran so long that the writers split the story between two characters.
- At the 2022 Cannes Film Festival, War Pony won the Caméra d'Or for Best First Film, and its lead animal actor, Brit, took the Palm Dog award.
