Plot summary
In 1899 the Martians attacked Earth, killing millions, and ten-year-old Eric Wells lost both parents to a tripod's heat ray in the ruins of Leeds. Fifteen years later, Eric, now twenty-five, joins the Allied Resistance Earth Squadrons in Manhattan, a city rebuilt on reverse-engineered Martian technology. Secretary of War Theodore Roosevelt and Professor Nikola Tesla address two thousand assembled soldiers: Tesla has found military codes from Mars and believes a second invasion is coming. Eric is given command of the Goliath, a 65-foot Achilles-class battle tripod, with a crew drawn from several nations. The assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand threatens to pull the alliance apart, but Eric argues that the members should stay and keep preparing.
