Plot summary
Three parts trace the Paleozoic era, the long stretch of time before the dinosaurs, from the Cambrian Period to the early Triassic. The series follows the early development of arthropods, fish, amphibians, reptiles and synapsids, and uses the stories of individual animals to frame the age as a contest between animal groups for dominance, with some new features described as inherited by humanity much later. Its creatures began as physical models built from fossil evidence, then were scanned and animated; reconstructions mix computer-generated imagery with animatronics and live-action footage, and 29 creatures feature in almost 600 visual effects shots. More than 600 scientists were consulted during production.
