Plot summary
The film sets out to give an impression of what being on the moon was like for the men who went there. Missions flown between 1969 and 1972 carried twelve astronauts to the surface, and their own remarks about what they saw are heard alongside images of the lunar landscape. Footage from the NASA archive, rare photographs and newsreel material are combined with re-enactments and computer-generated imagery. The title comes from an exchange on the surface between Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin: Armstrong calls the sight magnificent, and Aldrin answers with the words magnificent desolation. Much the same impression had been given nineteen years earlier in the 1950 film Destination Moon, where a character describes utter barrenness and desolation as the first thing the moon offers.
