Plot summary
Darwin IV orbits two suns 6.5 light years from Earth, and its gravity is 60 percent of Earth's. Judged able to support life, it becomes the target of an unmanned mission: the mothership Von Braun, carrying the probes Balboa, Da Vinci and Newton. Each Horus probe is a floating machine with a hydrogen balloon, a computer brain, a sensor-covered head and small helper robots. A supercomputer on the mothership does the real thinking, and the probes carry contrasting personalities: Ike is careful, Leo is the risk-taker. Ike and Leo were also equipped with a holographic message meant for sentient life. The mission anticipates microscopic organisms but finds an ecosystem of many sizes. The special adapts Expedition, a 1990 illustrated book, and adds commentary from scientists and science fiction figures.

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Alien Planet presents its featured scientists, among them Michio Kaku, Stephen Hawking, Jack Horner, James B. Garvin and George Lucas, as though they designed Darwin IV and its animals, but most of the planet and its life come from the book Expedition.
- The special departs from the book Expedition by moving the story from the mid-24th century to the near future and swapping its crewed expedition for sophisticated robotic probes.
