Trailer

Plot summary

Animation and archival footage combine to tell the story of August 1, 1966, when Charles Whitman took the elevator to the top of the University of Texas Tower and began shooting, holding the campus hostage for ninety-six minutes. The shooting is shown from the perspectives of several survivors, whose accounts are recreated by actors who were filmed and then animated through rotoscoping. Animation was chosen so the geography of the campus could be shown. More than one hundred people who witnessed the events were interviewed, among them reporters, police, students and faculty, and portions of their testimony accompany the archival record.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Tower (2016)

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.

  • Director Keith Maitland decided early on that Tower would use an animated aesthetic instead of live-action reenactments, because he and his team likely would not be able to film on the University of Texas campus; the animation let them show the campus's geography.
  • Most of Tower's footage was shot in director Keith Maitland's backyard and then animated by the production company Minnow Mountain, which was aided by photographs Maitland had taken around the University of Texas campus.
