Plot summary
Walden Dean works as a stenographer in Judge Boyle's courtroom, writing down what is said at trial. He lives alone and is estranged from his father, Jesse. After a case involving Norman Bolt, a man who raped his daughter and burned her to death, Walden is sickened. He faints at work, and tests find a tumor in his brain that may be terminal. He refuses surgery and cannot decide about medication that might only put off the end. One night he stops a robber in a convenience store and is shocked by his own violence.
