Plot summary
In 1972 Fielding Pierce is serving in the Coast Guard and looking toward a career in politics; by the following year he is in law school. He falls in love with Sarah Williams, an idealistic Roman Catholic drawn to programs for the poor, though his plan to work inside the system clashes with her belief that the system itself is the problem. Sarah dies in a car bombing in Minneapolis after a church-organized trip to Chile, where the group went to feed the poor and to organize resistance to the Pinochet dictatorship. Years later, during a congressional campaign and with a marriage ahead of him, Fielding is visited by thoughts and visions of Sarah, and his grip on his own sanity comes into question.
