Plot summary
The Negro Theatre Unit in New York plans the first staging of Macbeth with an all-Black cast. John Houseman leads the unit, and Rose McClendon serves as co-director. Both take a chance on Orson Welles, who is twenty years old, untested as a director of a stage production, and battling addiction, and who had worked as an actor and writer for radio. Welles argues that the Scottish play should be remade as a Haitian production, a version the company has not attempted. Rehearsals aim at the Lafayette Theater in Harlem, where the unit prepares to bring its all-Black Macbeth before an audience for the first time.
