Plot summary
Endorsed by the U.S. President, the Jeffers Corporation teaches that productivity equals happiness, and independent thought and intimacy are dying out. George Washington Winsterhammerman, a descendant of George Washington, holds a Level-3 job there and supervises a few people. All over the world, people explode from the stress of denying their feelings. The company's answer is mind control. George overeats and is impotent, and he dreams that he is the first president, facing defeat in the Revolutionary War. His wife, Michelle, reads a book on happiness and tries everything. His brother, released from prison, starts a freedom-of-expression movement in his backyard. Charisma, a woman from Level Four, sends him paperwork marked with smiley faces.
