Plot summary
Jessica comes aboard Space Station 76, a refueling station in a 1970s imagining of the future, to take the co-pilot's seat that Daniel left behind. At first everything on board seems normal. Life in a small outpost far from Earth wears on the crew, who struggle with loneliness, infidelity, depression and drug abuse. Jessica has trouble making friends and is puzzled by Captain Glenn, who is stiff and irritable and has secrets of his own. She is drawn to Ted, the mechanic, and to his young daughter Sunshine. Ted wants his marriage to Misty to work again, though Misty prefers talking over her problems with Dr. Bot, the station's robot psychologist, and feels threatened by Jessica.

- Liv Tyler came aboard Space Station 76 after a Skype call with writer-director Jack Plotnick that she called "half Skype session with a director and half therapy session for me"; she was also drawn in by his work as an acting teacher and his philosophy about the craft.
- Space Station 76 was the first film directed by Jack Plotnick, who developed the script through improvisation sessions at his home with some of his favorite actors.
- The soundtrack uses four Todd Rundgren songs, "International Feel", "I Saw The Light", "Hello It's Me" and "Utopia Theme"; Rundgren is the stepfather of the film's star, Liv Tyler.
- Jack Plotnick wanted to tell the story of his own upbringing but set it in the future as the 1970s imagined it, and chose a remote space station because it was a good metaphor for the suburbs, with a retro-future look standing for the "perfect future we dreamed of but that never came to be".
