Plot summary
Francis Costello, a French chef, travels to Macau after an attack leaves his daughter Irene badly hurt and kills her husband and their two children. At the hospital she tells him that three men carried out the shooting and that she wounded one of them in the ear. In his hotel Costello meets three hitmen, Kwai, Chu and Fat Lok, who work for the crime boss George Fung, and he hires them to hunt down the killers, offering a large payment and his restaurant. Because his memory is failing, he takes a Polaroid picture of each man and writes his name on it so he will not forget who they are. The four men then go to the apartment where the shooting happened to work out how many shooters were there and what weapons they used.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Vengeance (2009)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- ARP co-founders Michèle and Laurent Pétin first wanted Alain Delon for the lead of the English-language film they proposed to Johnnie To; Delon turned the role down in 2006. The Pétins then recommended Johnny Hallyday, who was cast after meeting To in early 2008.
- Vengeance was the first time Johnnie To worked from a complete shooting script, because the producers demanded the story and dialogue be written in advance; he normally improvised his scenes. Johnny Hallyday was the only actor who had read the script.
- Vengeance nearly was not made until 2010 because Johnnie To was hired to remake the 1970 French crime film Le Cercle rouge. His production assistant and translator Ding Yuin-Shan told Johnny Hallyday and the Pétins in mid-2008 that the remake was falling behind, so To could film Vengeance by the end of October 2008.
- When the Pétins arranged a meeting with Johnny Hallyday in February 2008, Johnnie To had never heard of the singer, though Hallyday was a fan of To's films. Shown footage of Hallyday's concerts and his 2002 film The Man on the Train, To was more impressed by the concerts.
